Mrs Tait, said: "The school's success is due to the exceptional commitment and hard work of the whole school team.

"This includes governors, teachers and support staff along with the partnership with the parents of pupils and the wider community."

Mrs Tait said it had been a "wonderful surprise" to receive a letter from David Bell, chief inspector of schools.

She said he congratulated the staff, governors and pupils at Kents Hill Infant School on the commendation.

The school in Kents Hill Road was among 456 schools in the UK that have been commended in the Office for Standards in Education report for 2001 to 2002.

Mr Bell said: "I believe these success stories are a testament to both the talent and dedication of the staff who work in these schools and colleges and the pupils themselves."

The report also praised Canvey Junior School, in Long Road, Canvey, and Lubbins Park Community Primary School, in May Avenue, Canvey.
