Southend United's new head coach Stewart Robson is planning to jump ship to Essex rivals Colchester -- just 18 days after arriving at Roots Hall.

The 38-year-old was appointed by Third Division Blues' co-owner Ron Martin to give extra help to Shrimpers boss Rob Newman.

But the former Arsenal and West Ham star admitted today he is already contemplating a new position, less than three weeks into his new job.

Robson, who lives in Bishop's Stortford, said his agent had put his name forward as a potential successor to Steve Whitton, who quit the Layer Road hotseat last week.

"My agent has applied for the Colchester vacancy on my behalf, as he always does when a job becomes available," he confirmed. "I've only just accepted the first team coach's role at Southend and I'm enjoying every moment of it.

"But Southend are aware of my interest in the Colchester job."

Robson had previously spent seven years coaching the youth, reserve and first teams at First Division Wimbledon.

He was brought to Roots Hall to aid Newman and work alongside the other two members of his coaching staff, former Blues favourites Steve Tilson and David Crown.

But news of Robson's planned defection to Second Division Colchester could anger some Southend fans who will be furious with his interest in joining their bitter rivals.

However, his current contract at Roots Hall runs out at the end of the season.

Blues supremo Martin said he was aware of Robson's link with Colchester and revealed his coach had already held talks with the U's.
