A popular Billericay bar is to be revamped into a trendy tapas bar.

Gary Stewart, manager of Quilters Bar, on Noak Hill Road, will take control of Webbers wine bar at the end of the month.

The bar, which has been in the High Street since 1976, will be given a facelift with plans to open as a family-run business called Stewart's in April.

Mr Stewart, 34, said: "I feel there is a gap in the market for a modern-style bar and we hope we can turn it into something very special. People here are now looking for something different.

"I hope I can continue the excellent name it has built up.

"I am leaving Quilters at the end of the month, quite amicably, and just wanted to go out on my own and take an opportunity I can't resist."

The bar will serve food at lunchtime and offer a tapas menu in the evenings. A room above may be transformed for private dining.
