It's all change for 16 Air Assault Brigade at Colchester Garrison.

Some of the top brass have been meeting with civic dignitaries in what could be one of the busiest times for the Garrison as Colchester troops await deployment to the Gulf.

New Garrison Commander Colonel Tony Barton has just held a meeting with mayor Nigel Chapman.

Colonel Barton, 49, took over from Colonel Julian Lacey as the Commander of Colchester Garrison and Wattisham Station in Suffolk.

And Brigadier Jonathan 'Jacko' Page, 43, has taken over from Brigadier Barney White-Spunner.

Brigadier Page joined the Army in 1981 as an officer in the Parachute Regiment, serving with 2 Para which is now based in Colchester.

His career has taken him to the Falklands, Belize and South Armagh and he later joined The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards to command a Challenger-equipped armoured squadron in Germany and went to the Gulf in 1990.

He was chief of staff of 24 Airmobile Brigade at Catterick and moved with the Brigade to Colchester in March 1993. He has recently been working in Whitehall on the strategic planning staff.

He said: "It is a great privilege to be given the opportunity to command 16 Air Assault Brigade."

Colonel Barton joined the Army in 1973 and was troop commander in General Transport Regiments in Germany.

He later supported the Commonwealth Monitoring Force overseeing the transition of Rhodesia as it won its independence as Zimbabwe.
