More than 1,000 people poured through the doors of a village hall to visit an exhibition staged to commemorate the Great Flood of 1953
The event was put on by St Osyth Historical Society over three days.
Phyl Hendy said it was a major success and they could hardly cope with the number of people who turned out.
The society took just short of £2,000 on the door and after expenses have been paid it is expected to make a profit of more than £1,000.
That will be ploughed back into the society's funds to buy more material for the archives.
Miss Hendy said: "It was quite overwhelming and there were times when we could hardly cope with the crowds.
"There were just under 900 people who paid to come in and we did not charge for members or children."
She thanked the Tendring History Recorders Group for the help it had given, as well as the 30 or so people who sent in their own tales and experiences of the flood.
There was a full list of the 46 people who died in the Tendring district, 35 of whom came from Jaywick.
