A thief stole a wheelchair-bound woman's shopping and then just walked away.

The disabled woman had been shopping in Colchester at about 1.45pm yesterday when the man struck.

She was outside Wilkinsons, in St John's Street, when a man took her shopping bag, containing her shopping and social security books worth about £30, from her wheelchair.

Det Sgt Roger Napier of Colchester CID, said the man had not snatched the bag but had just picked it up and walked away.

"He obviously did it because he knew she wouldn't be able to run after him. He saw an opportunity and targeted her for that reason.

He added: "These sort of people have no conscience about this sort of thing."

Det Sgt Napier said the woman, while upset by the incident, was not harmed by the thief.

The man is described as white, 5ft 10ins and wearing a black woollen hat. He also had a pit bull terrier dog with him.

Anyone who saw the theft take place or has any information is asked to call Colchester police on 01206 762212
