With the Cricket World Cup starting on Sunday, now is the time to start thinking about the sound of leather on willow.

And that is exactly what local cricket clubs are doing in preparation for the new season.

Basildon and Pitsea Cricket club have started their winter nets at James Hornsby School in Laindon and Fitzwimarc in Rayleigh.

Junior training for those aged 13 and under takes places at James Hornsby on Sundays between 2pm and 3pm, with adult nets at Fitz between 4pm and 6pm on Sundays.

Basildon and Pitsea run four adult teams on Saturdays and two on Sundays. The club also has under-11, under-13 and under-15 sides.

This summer will also see the introduction of outdoor nets at the club's Mopsies Park home, partly funded by a National Lottery grant.
