Plans for a multi-million pound David Lloyd leisure centre in Snakes Lane, Eastwood, have been refused for a second time.

Councillors gave the application short shrift, with a large majority voting to uphold their original refusal.

Roger Weaver (Eastwood Park Ward, Con) said: "If we change our minds on this, we are humiliating ourselves and bringing democracy into contempt.

"I think we made the right decision in the first place and the authority of that decision should stand."

Graham Longley (Blenheim Park Ward, Lib Dem) said: "Although I agree with this application and think it should go ahead, I also agree we should refuse it.

"David Lloyd will appeal this decision and is likely to get a quicker resolution through that process than if we reopen the issue here."

The committee agreed to refuse the application on the same grounds as the original refusal - that there were serious concerns over highways issues and traffic congestion which the site would cause.
