A block has been put on plans to build 34 new homes on the edge of a historic village.
RK Group Holding bought 1.78 acres of land from Essex County Council to develop part of the former Priory Meadow School site at St Osyth.
Part has already been given to the parish council for open space for the community and another section has been set aside for affordable homes.
Colne Housing has built nine properties and St Osyth Almshouse Charity is to put up another five.
The scheme for RK Holding is for the land in the middle.
But Tendring councillors on Tuesday night outlawed the plans as they felt they represented an overdevelopment of the site taking into account its surroundings.
John White (Ind, St Osyth) said the density of new properties was too high and should be more like 25.
David Brown, who represented the architects for the project, said his clients had worked on 35 homes and had been asked to reduce it to 34, which they had done.
