If Colchester United are looking for larger than life new manager they need look no further than Danish international Jan Molby.

The former Liverpool and Ajax midfielder revealed today that he is one of contenders for the vacant U's manager's job.

"I have applied," he said.

"And at the age of 39 with five years experience with lower league clubs such as Swansea City, Kidderminster and Hull City I believe I have a lot to offer."

Weighing in at over six-foot tall and almost 15 stone, Molby, capped 67 times by Denmark, sees his years of playing at the top with Liverpool and former Dutch champions Ajax as valuable experience for the job at hand if he does get the nod to take over at the Layer Road helm.

"It was a big eye-opener when I first stepped out of the top grade to take over as player-manager at Swansea," said the big Dane.

But he remains very proud of the fact that, with little cash at his disposal to splash out on new players, he guided the Swans' collection of youth and experience into the play-offs, winning a coveted Manager-of-the-Month award along the way.

He said: "My experience at Kidderminster also set me in good stead if I was to get the job at Colchester.

"The two clubs appear very similar in size and I would imagine they would work in very much the same way and operate on similar budgets as well."
