Charges look set to be brought in for a popular crime-busting scheme, which aims to keep youngsters off the streets of Tendring and out of trouble during the summer holidays.

One parent has attacked the charge, saying she will now consider if her children will attend

Coastal Fun attracts thousands of children each year and has proved a great success.

It has always been run free of charge by Tendring Council but parents are now likely be faced with a registration fee of up to £10.

The move is expected to coup about £5,000.

Tendring councillor Pierre Oxley said there was a strong commitment to the scheme which has been a fantastic success since it was introduced some years ago.

"It is a vital anti-crime initiative, which bears results and is backed by the police," he said.

"The charges are not about raising cash but more to do with the running of the scheme - and those on benefits will still get it free."

Mr Oxley, who is a member of the council's overview and scrutiny committee which looked at the issue, explained there had been problems with parents signing up and then their children did not attend.

He said that could lead to other yougnsters, who turned up on the day, being disappointed and missing out.

Mr Oxley said under the proposals, there will be a £10 fee per family, irrespective of however many youngsters sign up.

The matter is due to go before the council's full cabinet in the next couple of weeks.

One parent, Suzanne Moss, said she was disappointed at the charges and would have to consider whether her children would be attending.
