Aerospace giant BAE Systems - which employs 1,400 workers at its Basildon branch - has strengthened its presence in America by buying another contractor.
The country's biggest defence contractor has agreed to buy Mevatec Corporation of Huntsville, Alabama, for £49.7million.
Mevatec provides technical services to the US Department of Defence as well as government agencies.
The news of the step further in the company's plan to grow in the American market comes after the announcement more than 1,000 jobs were to be axed in the UK last month.
Despite this, the Basildon workers managed to escape the cuts, but are still waiting to hear about considerations of closing some pension schemes.
