Thieves have stolen the only means of transport for a disabled man who cares for his 88-year-old blind father.

Stephen Batterham, 39, of Mason Road, Clacton, uses his bike to collect shopping for his dad, Horace Batterham, but it was taken while he was in Pier Avenue.

It is the fourth time in six years he has had a bike stolen.

Horace Batterham said: "I'm registered blind and I really rely on him to do our shopping. I've got a heart condition and a pacemaker and I can do without this nonsense, he's so upset it's happened again."

Stephen suffers from a curvature of the spine and problems with his feet which means he has to have special shoes.

The blue Raleigh Courier was chained up outside Boots in Pier Avenue and taken at about 3.30pm on Wednesday.

Acting Insp Alan Beckett, of Clacton police, said: "It is terrible this has happened to the family again in such a short space of time and we are keen to catch those responsible."

Anyone who saw anything or knows where the bike may be is asked to contact Clacton police on 01255 221312.
