A major cash pot of £360,000 has been secured to provide care for patients with a terminal illness in Tendring, it was revealed today.

St Helena Hospice and Tendring Primary Care Trust made a successful bid for funding from New Opportunities for the money, which will help people stay in their homes in the final days of their life.

The cash will cover three years after which the Trust has undertaken to meet all the costs of the service in the future.

The funding will pay for four healthcare assistants and a nurse co-ordinator, specialist training and support.

The team will provide care for terminally ill patients across the whole of Tendring from the hospice's day centre in Jackson Road, Clacton.

The aim is to allow them to stay at home rather than be taken into the hospice if that is their wish.

Laura Parker, Tendring Primary Care Trust's head of community nursing, said the new service will complement existing services already provided by district nurses, social services, St Helena Hospice and Marie Curie.

"This money is very welcome news because this is a much-needed service," she said.

Rosy Stamp, hospice director, said the role of the new team would be to prevent admissions to hospital by offering practical and emotional support to people in their own home.
