Two men were today being hunted after a stolen Ford Sierra crashed head-on into a police car during a chase through Basildon.

Officers were on the scene in minutes after the blue Sierra sped off from a petrol station in Whitmore Way without paying for fuel.

A police helicopter was scrambled and the panicking Sierra driver hit several vehicles before screeching to a halt in The Fremnells, where all three occupants fled.

One arrest was made but two men evaded capture and are still at large. The officers in the damaged police car were unhurt.

Sgt Kelly Golding, of Basildon police, said: "A 36-year-old Basildon man was held in custody overnight but was released without charge this morning."
