Richard Wilkins wants to continue cutting his managerial teeth at a lower level before being considered for the vacant position at Colchester United.
Instead, the U's legend wants the post to go to caretaker boss Geraint Williams.
Wilkins, manager of Jewson League premier division side Bury Town, told the Evening Gazette: "I'd never say never but I feel I've been away from the professional game too long.
"I'm still learning at a lower level and I feel the job should go to someone who knows the current crop of players.
"Geraint deserves a crack of the whip, in my opinion."
Wilkins admitted he would be happy to help out on the coaching front.
