Canvey goal star Lee Boylan had good reason for yesterday turning down the chance of winning an England international cap... he is Irish!

Boylan has hit the net 24 times this season, but will not be scoring for the England National Game XI which takes on Belgium in Ostend on Tuesday night.

Boylan was one of five players from the Park Lane club named in the big-match squad.

But Gulls' boss Jeff King explained: "Lee has already played for Ireland earlier in his career at under-21 level and in fact holds an Irish passport."

Yet the selection of John Kennedy, Steve Ward, Chris Duffy and Jeff Minton for the travelling party -- with Ben Chenery on standby -- made it a night of triple celebration for the Gulls as they prepared for tomorrow's Essex derby at Grays, where they will try to take their unbeaten Ryman Premier run into double figures.

Added King: "It's tremendous for the club to have international recognition of this sort on such a large scale."
