Anglers have been warned to ensure their fishing boats are up to scratch when it comes to lifesaving equipment.
Southend Council is urging keen anglers to use licensed boats which will carry all the necessary lifesaving equipment.
The warning comes after three sailors had a lucky escape when their boat sank after crashing into Southend Pier.
Pier and foreshore officer Marjory Hall said unlicensed vessels may not carry sufficient equipment and the skipper may not have the skill to deal with an emergency.
She said: "Be safe and make sure you board a licensed boat so that angling can be enjoyed in and around Southend safely."
