Former England striking legend Alan Shearer is the top target for Southend United player-coach Steve Tilson's testimonial match.

A host of former England stars have already committed themselves to the match when the Shrimpers tackle a Three Lions XI at Roots Hall, managed by Lawrie McMenemy, on the evening of Tuesday, April 1.

The game will see Blues pay homage to the 36-year-old who has given more than a decade of loyal service to the club.

Ex-internationals who have promised to turn up on the big night are former Newcastle United and Liverpool striker Peter Beardsley, Derby County duo Rob Lee and Warren Barton, plus Brighton's 43-year-old veteran goalkeeper Dave Beasant.

Former Manchester United defender Paul Parker, who is manager of non-league Chelmsford City, will also pull on a shirt.

But Tilson hopes the inclusion of ex-Newcastle midfielder Lee, who played at the 1998 World Cup in France, will lure ex-England and Newcastle striker Shearer to Roots Hall.

"Rob Lee and Alan Shearer are best mates and it would be the icing on the cake to get somebody of his quality and stature to play at my testimonial," said Tilson, who has made 273 appearances for Blues in midfield.

"Now I'm hoping that Lee can use his influence to get him down to Roots Hall."

"I've spoken to Newcastle United and they have been great. They have said they will be more than happy to let Shearer come here if it doesn't interfere with their own commitments."
