Manchester United legend Lou Macari today paid tribute to Steve Whitton for the 'miraculous' job he did as Colchester United's manager.

But, despite being desperate to get back into management as soon as he can following his sacking at Huddersfield Town, Macari also revealed the vacant U's job is 'not' for him.

The former Old Trafford, Celtic and Scotland star, who guided the Terriers to the Second Division play-offs only last season, told the Evening Gazette: "Whoever gets the job has a tremendous act to follow.

"There are certain clubs in the Second Division who you look at - Colchester are one - and say to yourself, they are performing wonders to stay there.

"As an outsider I have an opinion and I cringe when I see managers like Steve Whitton getting the sack.

"Compared to clubs like Huddersfield, Colchester are one of the minnows and they gave us one helluva game down at their place last year.

"I got the sack for taking my team into the play-offs, Steve got the same last week for doing a remarkable job."

Macari was a member of the Manchester United team that beat the U's 1-0 in a 1979 FA Cup fifth round tie and 2-0 in a 1983 League Cup third round tie, both at Layer Road
