A controversial plan to close a private road used as a shortcut between Hockley and Hawkwell is to be decided at a special meeting next week.

Rochford District Council has been debating for months the proposal to close Magnolia Road, which runs between White Hart Lane and Rectory Road, and the scheme has divided local opinion.

The council has called a meeting of the environmental overview and scrutiny committee for Wednesday at Freight House, Rochford.

Residents can give their views, which will be put to the council's environmental services committee.

County highways area manager, Nick McCullagh, said in a report the road was a public footpath but also a private street which could be used by vehicles.

"The rights of way network in this area, including Magnolia Road, is considered to have great amenity value for walkers and riders, and is also used by children as a route to Greensward College."
