Up to 400 jobs could be axed at budget airline Buzz when Ryanair take over in April, the GMB union has warned.

The union claims that about 80 per cent of cabin crew, 25 per cent of pilots and 50 per cent of ground staff will lose their jobs at Buzz, which operates exclusively from Stansted Airport, when Ryanair takes control of the fleet on April 1.

When the £13 million takeover deal was agreed last month, it was reported that about 100 people could be made redundant.

But according to information the GMB claims to have received from the current owners of Buzz, 400 of their 600 staff are to lose their jobs when the fleet is grounded for rebranding from April 1.

Paul Kenny, spokesman for the GMB, warned that all jobs at the Stansted-based airline could be in jeapordy after the takeover.

He said: "The GMB believes that Ryanair's predatory takeover is simply to remove the opposition from the low-cost part of the industry."

A spokesman for Stansted Airport said the airport would be unable to comment until Ryanair makes an official announcement, which is expected in the next few weeks.
