Organisers of the Brentwood in Bloom Competition are hoping to uproot a few couch potatoes and cultivate a new crop of entrants for this year's premier gardening event.

Sponsors of the prestigious event say now is the time to get digging in preparation for a prizewinning summer display.

Last year an early appeal to the town's talented gardeners produced a bumper crop of entries for the best front garden category and now a similar message is being sent out to schools.

Peter Baggott, chairman of the Brentwood in Bloom Stratetgy Group, said: "We were pleased with last year's efforts and hope the trend will continue. This year we are making a special effort to attract school entries and have written to the headteachers of all the Brentwood primary schools.

"The key phrase is environmental sustainability. This can involve a low maintenance garden with plants that need little water, or attract wildlife and insects."

The final details of the competition have yet to be organised but there will be categories for best front gardens, schools and commercial premises, including public houses.

There is also a premier league for individuals who have previously won prizes for their front gardens.

Judging will take place in early July and the winners will be announced at a ceremony at Poplars Hall in Hutton on Friday July 18. Winning entries in the Brentwood in Bloom competition may be included in the town's bid for Anglia in Bloom.
