Braintree's MP has spoken out in support of a new police initiative after going to see it himself.

Alan Hurst went on the beat with officers and dropped in to the new mobile police station when it visited Braintree's Goldingham estate.

The estate became known for all the wrong reasons recently after a small group of persistent troublemakers embarked on a vandalism spree. Evening buses were cancelled after the yobs started throwing stones at them.

Labour MP Mr Hurst said: "When I got there there were a couple with their two young children, they want them to grow up with the idea that the police are the people you turn to if you've got problems.

"Then some young people came over to talk about their issues - like a skateboard park - and it was explained they should speak to the council.

"Certainly the people who spoke to us were very pleased to see the police there, and obviously that's the strength of the idea.

"It would be nice if it could be expanded maybe having one each for Braintree and Uttlesford districts rather than just the one to share."
