A popular sports centre could be facing the axe as part of a cost-cutting drive by Colchester Council.
The council's best value review panel has recommended terminating its £40,000 per year funding to the Monkwick Sports Centre.
Leisure services officers had been told they had to slash thousands of pounds from their budget and the Monkwick facility was a major casualty.
The centre is part of the Thomas, Lord Audley School and Language College and 25,000 people use it a year.
But head of leisure services Keith Nicholson told the meeting last night the centre was in a dire state of repair and the council could not afford to keep putting money forward.
He added negotiations would be started with education authorities and sports associations to ensure the facility could still be used by the community.
The panel's recommendation will be passed to the council's cabinet for it to make a final decision on the proposal on March 10.
