A masked gunman threatened a post-office manager before fleeing empty handed.
The robber burst into the premises in Kings Road, Chelmsford, at 5.30pm on Friday, brandishing a small black handgun.
His face covered with a black scarf, he demanded money but the 61-year-old manager refused.
Police believe the gunman made off on foot through the alleyways of the Melbourne area of town.
He is described as white although slightly tanned, in his early 20s, 6 - 6ft 2in tall and slim. He was wearing a black baseball cap, a black scarf across his face, a red v-neck jumper, black trousers and possibly trainers.
