A martial arts instructor was in jail today for trying to rape a teenager after climbing into her bedroom.

The terrified 13-year-old awoke to find Adrian Hubbard sitting astride her with his leather-gloved hand over her face and asking her to pull down her duvet cover.

When she managed to scream, Hubbard leapt from the first floor window of the girl's Witham home.

Her father later found a ladder propped against the wall under his daughter's room, Chelmsford Crown Court heard.

Thirty-year-old Hubbard, who teaches at the Black Tiger Kung Fu club in Witham, claimed he was home in bed at the time of the incident, but the girl got a look at his face and he left tell-tale mud stains on clothing in the girl's room which were similar to the soles of his boots.

Hubbard, of Rickstones Road, Witham, denied a charge of burglary with intent to rape the teenager but was convicted after a four-day trial.

It took the jury of six men and six women five-and-a-half hours to reach their majority verdict.

Hubbard was remanded in custody while a psychiatric report is prepared before sentencing.

Trial Judge Gareth Hawkesworth told him there was a serious issue of risk in the future.

The judge added: "You must accept and prepare yourself for a substantial custodial sentence."

The court heard how the girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, had gone to bed at about 10.30pm on the night of June 10.

She told the court what happened next: "I woke up and I was on my back and he was facing me. He was sitting on me and had his hand over my mouth. I didn't see him because he had his whole hand over my face and my eyes.

"He whispered in my ear "pull the covers down" and said this three or four times. His legs were either side of my legs and he had gloves on leather-like motor bike gloves.

"I was trying to tell him to get off me and was trying to scream. I was so scared when he said that. I just froze when he said that. I managed to turn my head and screamed as loud as I could. I screamed so loud he pounced off my bed and leapt out the window.
