A bogus council worker conned an elderly lady out of cash after calling at her Tiptree home.

The man visited her in Cedar Avenue and said he had been sent there to check the pipes.

Although he did not have any identification, the woman let him in and he went round the house on the pretence of looking at the plumbing.

But his victim later realised that £25 had been taken from her purse. Her sideboard had been searched and drawers in the bedrooms had been opened.

The bogus caller is described as a white man, aged 30 to 40 and was wearing a brown suite. Police believe he may have been using a red vehicle.

Anyone with information about the crime, at about 2.30pm on Thursday, should call Colchester police on 01206 762212
