England left-back Chris Powell has confirmed he will return to Roots Hall to play in former Southend United team mate Steve Tilson's April testimonial.

Powell, 33, played 290 games for Blues and is one of the most popular players of all time to pull on a Shrimpers shirt.

The former Southend skipper is currently plying his trade in the Premiership for surprise UEFA cup spot chasers Charlton Athletic.

And Tilson was ecstatic after Powell, who has been capped five times by England, promised to bring his boots to Roots Hall on the evening of Tuesday, April 1.

"It's great news to know that Chris will definitely be here and I'm grateful to both him and Charlton," he said.

"Chris was a legend at Southend and is one of the best players I have ever played alongside.

"He's gone on to do really well for himself since leaving Roots Hall, but he deserves all the success he has achieved in the Premiership and with England.

"Chris is one of the nicest guys in the game and has never forgotten that he made his name with Blues.

"He is always quick to pay credit to the club and its fans for getting him where he is today and that is why he is held in such high esteem by the Southend supporters."

Tickets for the benefit match for Blues midfielder Tilson go on sale next Monday at the Third Division side's club shop at Roots Hall. Prices are just £10 for adults and £5 juniors.

The kick-off for the main game between Southend and an England XI has been set at 8pm.

A host of England stars of the past including Peter Beardsley, Rob Lee and Warren Barton are already confirmed for the event.
