Phil Parkinson was today named as the new Colchester United manager.

The 35-year-old former Reading player/coach takes over team affairs with immediate effect from caretaker Geraint Williams and will be in charge of the side for the first time when they play Port Vale at Layer Road on Saturday.

New boss - Phil Parkinson

Parkinson, who leaves behind a new three-and-a-half year deal to coach at the Madejski Stadium, is excited by his new challenge and can't wait to get started.

He said: "I feel honoured to be given the job. It is an opportunity that I couldn't turn down.

"I feel that I am coming into the club with my feet already running, but I am ambitious and I am very keen to make my way in the game."

Parkinson also revealed that his appointment as the U's new boss has not necessarily signalled the end of his playing days.

He said: "Last season I played in a team that won promotion out of this division and although I haven't played much football this season, playing is an option that I want to leave open."

Parkinson said he was flattered to be approached by Colchester chairman Peter Heard.

He said: "As a player myself I like to perform with passion and that's what I will be looking for the lads to do here. I am sure we can all achieve what we are looking for with the fans backing."

Parkinson also confirmed that he will be looking to name current caretaker boss Williams as his official number two.
