The owner of Westleigh Motors in Leigh today assured customers that his business is not closing and won't be leaving the town.

Brian Gunner, managing director of the car sales company in London Road, spoke after an application to build 38 flats on the company's Mazda showroom was lodged with Southend council.

He believes the plan led customers to believe the company is preparing to shut up shop.

Mr Gunner said: "We will not be closing. This company has been in Southend for 20 years and will be here for another 20 if I can help it. We want to relocate because we have terrible problems with parking in London Road.

"But we will keep the business in Southend as we are committed to keeping jobs and services in the area."

Mr Gunner hopes to relocate the business to the A127 where it can have purpose- built customer car parks.

He said: "We have outgrown the London Road building and it makes senses to move to larger premises."
