A south Essex MP today demanded that Britain should "take back her seas" and stop foreigners fishing in her waters.

Tory Bob Spink's outburst came after shadow fisheries minister John Hayes visited Leigh to chat to fishermen and MPs about the future of the industry.

Mr Hayes told Daryl Godbolt, chairman of the Fishermen's Association, the country should get out of the Common Agricultural Fisheries Policy imposed by the European Union.

He suggested Britain should adopt a scheme similar to that used by Norway, which controls its own waters, as this would benefit local fishermen and preserve fish stocks.

Around 40 fishermen turned up for the meeting at the Ship Hotel in Old Leigh.

Later, Castle Point MP Mr Spink said: "We have to pass a law which will reform the EU legislation so we can get back control of our waters."I have called for this on several occasions in the House. The Common Fisheries Policy is a nonsense which is destroying our fish stocks.

"We adhere to the laws but the Spanish and French do not and the fish stocks are disappearing.

"Because of this we ought to take control of our waters back and keep the foreigners out."
