Vandals and thieves went on the rampage in Chelmsford over the Easter weekend, causing thousands of pounds' worth of damage to vehicles.

Now police are warning car owners to be alert after the spate of crime which saw cars damaged or broken into.

Although police are not linking the incidents, they are urging people to report anything suspicious to them.

In Avon Road, stereo equipment and £400-worth of CDs were stolen from a Ford Fiesta.

A Ford Escort left in the Essex County Council car park in Duke Street had £600-worth of stereo equipment stolen from it.

A handbag containing £80-worth of items, was taken from a Renault Scenic parked in Chelmsford.

Various cars parked around the town were also damaged, including a Rover 620 in Tennyson Road, which needed £100-worth of repairs after a stone was thrown through the rear windscreen.

Other cars parked in White Hart Lane, Langton Avenue, Moulsham Street and Coronation Road also had hundreds of pounds' worth of damage caused to them.

Sgt Chris White said: "Anyone who has had any damage caused to their vehicles or anything stolen and has not reported it to the police should do so as soon as possible."

Anyone with any information should telephone Chelmsford police station on 01245 491212.
