An ambitious plan to create a multi-purpose youth facility in South Woodham Ferrers could solve the town's youth problems for good.

Following on from its success with the Compass Gardens skateboard park, the Youth Council will be meeting next Wednesday to discuss converting a factory building into a sports club and disco venue.

Chairman Josh Wilkins, 15, said: "We are thinking about a new project. We are considering using an industrial unit where we could hold different kinds of events.

"It could be used by groups like the Swallows for gymnastics and the Roller Speed Club.

"Then it could become a place for young people to hang out in the evenings.

"It's a very ambitious project - but it is a good idea, and if it comes through it will be really good."

Honorary president Maureen Moulds suggested that, while South Woodham Ferrers had clubs and organisations that were suitable for younger teenagers, there were few activities for older youths.

Youth council members will consider approaching town groups that would benefit from the proposed facility after a meeting next week.
