Fly-tippers are costing Tendring taxpayers hundreds of pounds as council workers battle to keep on top of a rising tide of litter and rubbish.

The latest incident has seen cars, furniture and unwanted televisions dumped in a layby in Little Clacton Road, Little Clacton.

One resident who lives nearby, but did not want to be named, said the fly-tipping had been an issue for a few years.

"It's just piling up. It looks like a rubbish tip and it's gradually getting worse," she said, after the two cars were dumped with their doors open and the windows smashed, along with piles of rubble and old bits of furniture.

"I would like to see something being done. What must holiday-makers think?

Bill Smith, Tendring Council's recycling officer, said the waste seemed to have been left over the holiday weekend.

He said: "It's environmental vandalism and we're disgusted by the whole thing.

"There's two cars and three pick-up trailers full of dumped rubbish."

The council is arranging to have the litter and cars removed but Mr Smith said the cost would indirectly be passed on to the tax payer.
