A girl left housebound after being knocked down by a car was today smiling again as she prepares to watch her Southend United heroes in action.

Football fan Lauren Lewis is still battling to come to terms with horrific leg injuries suffered after she was hit by a car.

The 14-year-old has nightmares ten months after the accident on Chalkwell Esplanade, Westcliff. But she was all smiles when kind-hearted Shrimpers fan Michael Simpkins donated two tickets to the schoolgirl for the final home game against Bury this Saturday.

Lauren, of Stagden Cross, Pitsea, said: "This has really cheered me up. I love watching Southend United play, but since the accident I haven't been able to get along to many matches.

The pupil, of Chalvedon School, in Wickford Avenue, Pitsea, suffered a broken leg after being hit by a car.

Despite months of hospital treatment and seven operations, Lauren is still unable to walk without the aid of crutches and is virtually housebound.

Lauren added: "It is really kind of Mr Simpkins to donate the tickets and I am really looking forward to the match."

Mr Simpkins, who used to live in Southend, but now lives in Corsham, Wiltshire, said: "I am a member of the Southend United Football Club Exiles which was set up by a number of fans who have moved away from the area. I'm just glad we can help Lauren see her favourite team."
