A six-shooter Colt 45 handgun and a box of live ammunition has been handed into Basildon police station.

The gun was handed in as part of the Home Office national firearms amnesty.

In Essex more than 500 weapons have been surrendered along with more than 8,000 rounds of ammunition.

The amnesty, which allows anyone possessing a firearm to hand it in to police without fear of prosecution, ends on Wednesday. Police say they have been encouraged by the response so far.
