Billericay's three-match winning run came to an end at a Grays side who, in a very disappointing season, finally put an end to all fears of relegation from the Ryman Premier.

The home outfit put out a team containing all four of the players they have signed from the New Lodge club, who have not surprisingly slumped alarmingly over the second-half of the season following the departure of most of their established stars due to cash cuts on the football side.

To be honest Billericay had no real answer to the power of their hosts on a poor playing surface and could have lost more heavily.

As it was they were beaten by a 57th-minute goal from substitute Carl Leaburn.

The ex-Charlton Athletic striker, who came on for one of the former Billericay men, Roy Essandoh, was in the right place to head home a right-wing cross from Peter Smith.

Travelling fans had hoped that Billericay could continue in the same vein that saw them beat Canvey 2-1 at home on Easter Monday.

But it was not to be with first choice goalkeeper Jerome John being forced off with a groin injury at the interval.

Big-spending Grays' director of football Mick Woodward conceded: "I fully accept we have made mistakes this season, but I generally feel we have learned from them. Watch this space."

Town boss Gary Calder, many feel, will have done well to see his makeshift side finish in a top-half position -- something they should accomplish if they pull off their expected home success over bottom club Hampton in their final game at New Lodge next Saturday.
