Residents have reacted angrily over travellers who have camped out at a seaside country park.

Initially, about 15 caravans moved on to the main car park on Holland Haven just before Easter and set up camp.

But despite urgent moves to shift them within days, the number swelled to an estimated 70 caravans.

Growing: Caravans at the park

There were still about 30 caravans some on the car park and others nearer the clifftop.

The travellers have been accused by residents of dumping rubbish, riding noisy quad bikes, disturbing wildlife and vandalising buildings.

There are also fears bank holiday visitors may be put off this weekend.

Essex County Council's gipsy liaison officer said he understood they would only be there for a few days.

Efforts to repossess the site was sought through the County Court.

A spokesman for Essex County Council said papers were served on the travellers on Friday, giving notice of a court hearing tomorrow.

He said he was hopeful of obtaining possession after which they could be moved.

One nearby resident described the mess at the park as "appalling" and others complained about the noise and damage to the park.

There is no official site for travellers in the Tendring district.

When the Evening Gazette approached the group of travellers, a spokesman said there had been no trouble.

Asked about the rubbish he gave an assurance: "We will be taking it with us."
