One of the biggest shops in Witham high street is facing an uncertain future.

The two-storey building in Newland street, used by the Colchester and East Essex Co-operative Society for electrical goods for many years, now stands empty.

The company says it has merged its electronics department with the furnishing department in the next door building for the convenience of customers. It leaves the former electrical store unused.

It has also obtained planning permission to demolish the carpet warehouse in adjoining Kings Chase to create more parking space for staff and customers.

A company spokesman said the future of the empty building was undecided at the moment.
