Southend's cricketers were heavily beaten after being put in to bat in their friendly with Wickford.

On a lively wicket only Ian Heiser's 27 and Wayne Spear's 32 offered any resistance as they slumped to 124 all out.

Former Essex player Chris Gladwin took 5-27 to rip out the middle order.

In the Wickford reply he hit 55, backed by 30 from Mark Evans and 37 not out from K Beazleigh as the visitors coasted home by eight wickets.

The Second XI batted better against their Wickford counterparts at the Patmore ground as Ken Porter (71) and Martin Hill (69) shared an opening stand of 139 on the way to a total of 228-4.

But an unbeaten 99 from Nigel Lawrence saw the hosts reach their target with two overs to spare for a six-wicket win.

The Sunday XI beat Chadwell Heath by 58 runs after Ben Wathen hit his maiden Sunday century.

His 162 included 18 fours and six sixes, laying the foundations of a total of 273-7.

Chadwell were all out for 215 in reply.
