A man trying to claim cash with a pension book ran off after post office staff queried it.
The suspected deception attempt was reported at Marks Tey Post Office in London Road, Marks Tey, after he went in with the claim slips.
Described as black with curly hair, the man is believed to have fled in a silver, V-registration Ford Escort car after staff queried the transaction.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Colchester police on 01206 762212 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
