Golfers at Clacton were lucky to escape serious injury after they were pelted with missiles by youngsters during their round.

Three teenagers threw stones at two players at Clacton Golf Club in West Road.

Then as two others went over to see what was happening they were subjected to the same treatment.

Two iron: Jim Wiggam with one of the two metal objects

As well as stones, two heavy metal objects about a foot long were hurled at them - narrowly missing a woman who was playing golf with her husband.

Clacton Golf Club secretary Jim Wiggam said it was fortunate no-one was injured in the attack.

"The golfers said the acts were deliberate attempts to hit them with the objects," he said.

"Luckily no one was hurt in the incident."

The players recovered the two metal objects which are believed to have come from a burnt out moped next to the Martello Tower on Clacton seafront.

The teenagers who threw the stones and missiles on Sunday are believed to be aged between 14 and 17-years-old. One was black and two were white. They were wearing parkas or anoraks with hoods.

The trio all made their escape towards Jaywick - despite efforts by one of the golfers to catch up with them.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information is asked to contact Clacton Police on 01255 221312
