Film buffs are being warned to watch out for a thieving gang targeting a local cinema.

Police have reported a spate of thefts at the Odeon cinema in Victoria Circus, Southend, where women's bags have been stolen from under their seats.

Cinema-goers have also been victims of pickpockets. A police spokeswoman said officers were working with the cinema to try and catch the thieves.

She said: "This is an unusual number of thefts from one place, so we believe there is a link between these offences. We ask people to be particularly vigilant.

"Keep your handbag on your lap or between your feet - where you can see or feel it at all times."

A handbag containing a personal organiser and cash, worth £80, was stolen during a matinee performance on Monday. A rucksack containing keys, a mobile and cash, worth £360, was stolen on Friday, and a bag containing sweets and cash, worth £70, was stolen the day before.

A 44-year-old man was pickpocketed at the cinema on Saturday, and his wallet was later found with £60 missing.

On Monday, a 17-year-old mother was changing her baby in the cinema toilets with her handbag hanging over the pram. When she turned round, the bag, which contained nearly £300 cash and a milk token, had been swiped.

Anyone with information about any of these crimes should contact police on 01702 431212.
