Golfers are seething after vandals on quad bikes drove across prized greens at the prestigious Frinton Golf Club.

Deep tracks and skid marks were left on greens after the hooligans damaged them.

Today ground staff were working to repair the greens at Frinton Golf Club.

Club manager and secretary Lt Col Roger Attrill said: "They will recover but it's just the sheer audacity of it."

The club was attacked two nights running over the weekend and youngsters riding quad bikes were spotted on the course again on Sunday morning.

One witness was an off-duty policeman who shouted at the vandals.

Lt Col Attrill said the course could still be played but it would take a lot of work to get the greens back as they were.

Sgt John Scott of Walton police said: "We are aware of the on-going problem and the officers are looking into it."

He said police officers had been advised to keep an eye on the golf club area. Insp Adrian Coombs of Clacton Police also assured the club he would prosecute if the culprits could be traced.
