A war veteran is to display his fighting spirit to raise hundreds of pounds for charity.

Fred Odell, 82, of Peel Crescent, Braintree, will be taking part in the Broomfield Hospital's Orthopaedic Walk at the end of June.

Ready for charity walk - Fred Odell

Despite being partially sighted, deaf and walking with the aid of a walking stick after a hip replacement, Mr Odell is putting many of us to shame by taking part in the mile-long walk.

The widower, who took part in the Normandy landings during the Second World War, has collected £400 in sponsorship in Braintree, which he will present to the hospital on the day of the walk.

It is open to anybody who has undergone orthopaedic surgery or joint replacements like Mr Odell, who had his two years ago.

He said: "They have done me a good turn and I shall do the same for them."

The walk and fun day is being held on June 22 at the hospital grounds. It begins at 2pm.

For more information about the walk or for entry forms, contact the Mid Essex Hospital Services Trust charities offices on 01245 515529.

Anyone who would like to have a stall at the event should call 01245 515529.
