Southend United owner Ron Martin claimed today that sacked manager Rob Newman was given adequate opportunity to bring in his own coach.

The former Shrimpers boss has been critical of the Third Division club's head trainer Stewart Robson, who was hired without his consent in January.

Martin took the decision to recruit Robson and Newman, fired three months ago, believes the ex-Arsenal and West Ham midfielder's appointment signalled the end of his 17-month spell in the Roots Hall hot seat.

But Seasiders supremo Martin replied: "Rob Newman had adequate opportunity to bring in a duly qualified further assistant long before I interjected.

"And I am confident Stewart will make a very positive contribution to the team's success next season, working alongside the experienced management of Steve Wignall.

"I genuinely wish Rob well for the future. But viewed after the event, Rob may have made different decisions.

"From my perspective, he was provided with every support and encouragement by myself and the rest of the club's board, not only in regard to players, but also coaching assistance."

Meanwhile, Blues are rumoured to have agreed a deal with global sportswear giants Nike to make their kit next season.

The new shirts are expected to be premiered at the Shrimpers' annual Meet the Blues Day at Boots and Laces in Eastern Avenue, Southend, on Sunday, July 20.
