New Southend United goalkeeper Carl Emberson has set his sights on claiming a hat-trick of Third Division promotions.

The 29-year-old giant has joined Blues on a free transfer, putting pen-to-paper on a two-year contract with the Roots Hall club.

And he is hoping history repeats itself as his last two stints in the basement league, with Colchester and Luton Town, have both ended on a high note.

"The last two times I have played in the Third Division I have won promotion and it would be great to make it three on the spin with Southend," said Emberson.

"When I was at Colchester we went up through the play-offs, under Steve Wignall who is in charge at Roots Hall now, and at Luton we won automatic promotion a couple of years ago.

"And I don't see any reason why I can't achieve the same thing with Southend. Blues are a big club at this level and it wasn't long ago they were playing in the First Division.

"I can remember when I started my career at Millwall seeing some very good Southend sides in Division One and I'm sure the club can get back up there again."
