Colchester heart patients have been told not to be sceptical about the location of a new £56 million specialist heart and chest centre for Essex.
The next stage of development for the caridothoracic centre at Basildon and Thurrock University Hospital was approved at a meeting of the Essex Strategic Health Authority (ESHA).
But Colchester MP Bob Russell spoke on behalf of patients who believe they will have to travel to Basildon for every stage of treatment.
He said: "I still think the public acceptance requires more awareness that its location is not as important as people think it is."
Terry Hanafin, chief executive of the ESHA, said: "Once the centre is open, there is only one stage when people have to go there, which is fantastic."
