Several small strips of land have been sold off by Castle Point Council in a bid to clean-up areas of the borough.

Part of a car park in School Lane, Benfleet has been sold to four residents who want to extend their gardens.

Asset management councillors felt it was not viable as a car park and agreed unanimously that the residents could make better use of it.

Deputy leader of the council Jeffrey Stanley said: "The area is in a very poor state. Hopefully there will be some good improvements made by selling it for private use."

A piece of land at Charfleets Close in Canvey was sold off to a firm which already leases some adjacent land.

A piece of scrub land in Woodburn Close, Thundersley, used as a dumping ground, was sold off because the council could find no use for it.
